The peony has been China's emblem of wealth and high honour since the Tang dynasty, when it filled the imperial gardens of Chang'an and earned its name as the flower of riches and rank (富贵花). The Motif · Ruyi Peony (如意定胜纹)

On this bag the pattern is given room to be read. A single woven panel of Song Brocade sits at the front, framed in cream leather and crowned by a polished turn-lock, so the eye falls first on the medallions themselves: ruyi forms and peony hearts rendered in pale gold, lilac, sky blue and blush against an ivory ground. The pastel palette keeps the motif quiet in daylight and luminous under warmer light, where the silk catches and lifts the gold.

Woven in Song Brocade

Song Brocade (宋锦) is one of the four great brocades of China and part of the country's recognised intangible cultural heritage. It is woven, never printed: the pattern is built thread by thread into the structure of the silk on a jacquard loom, through more than 30 separate stages before a single length is finished. The result is a surface with real depth, where the design belongs to the cloth rather than sitting on top of it.

Because the motif is woven in mulberry silk rather than stamped, it holds its colour and dimensionality with wear, ageing slowly and gracefully alongside the leather that frames it.
