In Chinese tradition, the pairing of the qilin and the peony (麒麟牡丹) holds a wish for fortune and flourishing in a single image.

The qilin is a mythical composite creature of Chinese legend, blending several animals into one: a dragon's head, the scaled body and cloven hooves of a deer, and often a single horn, which is why it is sometimes called the Chinese unicorn. Gentle by nature, it is said to harm no living thing and to appear only in times of peace, and so it has long stood as a guardian of good fortune and an emblem of virtue.

The peony, the King of Flowers, blooms beside it as the voice of wealth and grace (富贵), celebrated since the Tang court as the nation's beauty and heaven's fragrance (国色天香). Together they carry both the solemnity of a heaven-given blessing and the warmth of earthly splendour, a quiet wish for lasting fortune and abundant years. The Motif · Qilin and Peony (麒麟牡丹)

The qilin and peony pattern follows an old Chinese principle of design, that every pattern should carry a meaning, and every meaning should be auspicious (图必有意，意必吉祥).

By bringing a real flower together with a mythical guardian, an abstract blessing becomes something you can see and hold, in the same family as motifs like the dragon and phoenix in harmony. On this tote the scene is woven across a warm champagne-gold ground, where the qilin steps through drifting clouds and open peony blooms in the palest ivory and blue. Framed by slim leather slats across the front, the brocade reads like a series of hung scrolls, full and dimensional, catching the light gently as the bag moves.

Song Brocade (宋锦)

The face of this bag is genuine Song Brocade (宋锦), known as the Crown of Brocades (锦绣之冠) and one of the three great brocades of China. In 2006 it was inscribed in the first national list of China's intangible cultural heritage. The pattern is not printed onto the cloth. It is raised thread by thread on the jacquard loom and coloured with natural dyes, which is why the gold holds its depth and the design sits full and dimensional against the silk.

Woven in natural mulberry silk, the brocade is firm yet soft, with the quiet, antique lustre that only true silk weaving gives. The result is a cloth that is luminous without shine, regal without noise, and made to wear gracefully through the years.
